Opening in London's theatreland this summer is a stunning new production of the musical 'Annie', last seen in the West End in 1998.
Originally based on the popular series of Little Orphan Annie newspaper comic strips drawn by Harold Gray in the 1920s and 30s, the musical tells the story of Annie and her life in a New York orphanage during the Great Depression, a story where despite the odds hope triumphs over experience, kindness and generosity win the day over cruelty and malice, and a heart–warming conclusion leaves audiences satisfied and uplifted.
Unfortunate Annie lives a 'hard–knock life' of drudgery at the orphanage run by evil Miss Hannigan (boo, hiss!), but despite her misfortune always believes inside that 'the sun'll come out tomorrow'. Things look up when she is chosen to spend a fairytale Christmas with billionaire philanthropist Oliver 'Daddy' Warbucks, and experiences a glimpse of what a happy, prosperous life can be like. This makes her wonder about her real parents and she fantasises that 'Maybe' they are out there looking for her... She's determined to find out what happened to them, despite mean Miss Hannigan's efforts to stop her, but discovers that sometimes a happy ending can be different from the one you first imagined.
