It is over 75 years since Douglas Bader and the first Spitfire squadrons flew out of RAF Duxford against the might of the Luftwaffe – and into history. To mark this century–defining event we visit Duxford for a spectacular air show featuring some of the most iconic aircraft of the 1940s.
You can visit the Operations Room from where the aerial campaign was directed, complete with charts, plans and equipment which mapped the movements of overhead battles. You can tour the restoration hangar where engineers prepare classic aircraft for flight, and the Battle of Britain hangar containing among other craft an original Messerschmitt Bf 109. With over 200 planes, tanks and boats to see the Imperial War Museum Duxford is a fascinating journey through British military history.
We'll also spend an afternoon among over 100 legendary aircraft at the RAF museum, Hendon. Here you'll find a Sopwith Camel, a de Havilland Mosquito B.35, an Avro Lancaster B.1 bomber, a Boeing B–17G Flying Fortress, a Halifax, a Liberator, a Tornado, a Hurricane, a Heinkel... New for this year is a First World War in the Air exhibition, plus a life–sized model of the F–35 Joint Strike Fighter, the only model of its type in the world. You can listen to Winston Churchill giving his Battle of Britain speech on radio, and check out the Bomb Bay television view under a Vulcan bomber. What with coach travel and hotel with 3–course dinner and breakfast, this terrific value Omega weekend will be enough to drive you plane crazy!
