Travel along some of the greatest railways in the world on this exhilarating break and discover the outstanding beauty of the Scottish Highlands. From the village of Aviemore, we join the Strathspey Steam Railway – the longest, most scenic heritage line in Scotland which cuts through the Cairngorm National Park. Our next railway treat is an unforgettable journey on the West Highland Line, starting from the foot of Ben Nevis before passing lochs and glens and crossing the 21 arch viaduct of Harry Potter fame. Our final railway trip is along the Kyle Line, the original ‘Great Railway Journey of the World’ as featured in Michael Palin’s popular documentary series, with dramatic sections carved out of solid rock. We also follow the famous Malt Whisky Trail – the only trail of its kind in the world, and take a tour of The Glenlivet Distillery followed by a complimentary dram.
Day 1: Overnight Hotel
Your holiday begins when you board our private coach in the early morning and travel towards Scotland, making appropriate stops en route. We check into our hotel in the Glasgow area and enjoy a relaxing evening with dinner included.
Day 2: Strathspey Steam Railway
After your included breakfast we travel into the Scottish Highlands to reach Aviemore, a popular town in the very heart of the Cairngorm National Park. Here we join the Strathspey Steam Railways for a scenic journey through Boat of Garten and on to Broomhill, or ‘Glenbogle’ as viewers of the hit BBC series ‘Monarch of the Glen’ may recognise it as. The sights and sounds of this beautiful 9 ½ mile journey will allow you to relive the romance of steam locomotion, along with spectacular views of mountains, heather fields, moors, forests and more as we travel alongside the River Spey. Later in the day we check in to our hotel and enjoy a three course meal.
Day 3: Whisky Trail
After your included breakfast we travel by coach along part of the famous Malt Whisky Trail – the only trail of its kind in the world, with several whisky distilleries nestling in the peaceful hills and glens of Speyside. Our tour includes entrance to The Glenlivet Distillery, where we take a guided tour to learn more about the intriguing history of this single malt which ends with a complementary dram. You can also try some of the famous whisky cake which is available to buy in the coffee shop or buy your own bottle of The Glenlivet from the gift shop. We return to our hotel for your included evening meal.
Day 4: West Highland Line
After your included breakfast we travel to Fort William, which sits at the foot of Ben Nevis – Britain’s highest mountain, and join the West Highland Line. Sit back, relax and enjoy spectacular scenery as we travel along what is known by many as the most scenic railway line in the world. The route takes us over the Glenfinnan Viaduct, which has been used as a location for many film and TV series including ‘Harry Potter’, through Arisaig with its views of the Small Isles of Rum, Eigg, Muck and Canna, and the white sands of Morar before arriving in Mallaig. We disembark in Mallaig and enjoy some time free time to explore this active fishing port, before returning to our hotel for your included evening meal.
Day 5: Kyle Line
After your included breakfast we travel to Inverness and board the train for our included journey on the famous Kyle Line, travelling from Inverness on the east coast of Scotland to Kyle of Lochalsh on the west. This journey on the single track line, as featured on Michael Palin’s ‘Great Train Journeys of the World’, takes us through miles of breathtaking scenery. On arrival in Kyle you have some free time to explore before we return to our hotel for your included evening meal.
